The American Wing of The Met

This vessel is attributed to Thomas Commeraw, a free African American potter working in Manhattan's Lower East Side during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. As stamped on this vessel, Commeraw operated a kiln in Corlears Hook, the area along the shoreline of the East River now between the Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridge. Like most stoneware potters, Commeraw's vessels were utilitarian and employed incised decoration accented with a cobalt glaze; however, the floral motif on both sides of this jar distinguish his work from that of other New York City potters of this period. While Commeraw did occasionally mark his wears with his name, this jar lacks any such marks. Based on city records, we know another potter, David Morgan, also worked with Commeraw at the Corlears Hook kiln, making it difficult to assign the jar to Commeraw with absolute certainty. Jar, attributed to Thomas Commeraw or David Morgan, 1797-1819 (18.95.13) #metamericanwing #themet #metmuseum #stoneware #ceramics #cobalt #jars #corlearshook #LES #manhattan #nyc #newyork #ThomasCommeraw #blackhistorymonth
