The J. Lohr Estates Los Osos Merlot is named for the “Los Osos” soils on which its grown in the relatively cool climate of the El Pomar district in Paso Robles. It’s a combination of site and conditions that have proven perfect for crafting complex, structured Merlot.
Our Merlot is pure Paso Robles in a glass. Lush cherry / plum flavors with just the right amount of food-friendly tannins and a deliciously long vanilla – oak finish. Perfect with just about anything off the grill.

Final stop for our Merlot before release: barrel aging for 12 to 14 months. The oak aging and a touch of Malbec in the blend provide layered complexity, finish, and structure to the J. Lohr Estates Los Osos Merlot. That subtle signature spice / vanilla note from the cooperage is the perfect finishing touch. FRTakeover by @jlohrwines . . . Harvest time is both exciting and nerve-wracking, as we constantly monitor every row of Merlot vines to pick at the exact moment of optimal sugar / acid balance and ripeness. Happily, our Vineyards and Winemaking teams have a decades-long track record of growing superb Merlot in Paso Robles. Probably why the J. Lohr Estates Los Osos Merlot is one of America’s favorites, vintage after vintage. FRTakeover by @jlohrwines . . . Not all red wine grapes are created equal. Did you know the name “Merlot” comes from a local French word for blackbirds, “mèrle?” Here’s a shot of one of our beautiful Merlot clusters, pre-pick, in the El Pomar district of Paso Robles.

At J. Lohr, we often harvest Merlot twice - early picks capture the classic varietal traits of Merlot while fruit harvested later in the season brings depth and intensity to this wine. “Place” (in this case Paso Robles), is very important when it comes to growing and producing great Merlot. But another crucial element is “Family.” And the J. Lohr extended family includes some of the industry’s most talented, most experienced winemakers. Can’t wait to taste what our winemaking team has been working on for our 2017 vintage. Stay tuned! Jerry Lohr helped pioneer Paso Robles as a winegrowing region. In 1988, he planted his first Cabernet vines in the area. Today, three decades later, the Paso Robles appellation has a world-class reputation for producing great reds, including, of course, Merlot! We’re just finishing up the 2017 harvest in Paso. So far, the Merlot fruit arriving at the winery looks sensational. FRTakeover by @jlohrwines . . . After a dinner at ReComiendo, a tasting tour at Toro Albala, a tapas tour in Granada, and a visit to Alhamabra, for our final day, we were excited to indulge in a beachside grill at Hermanos Muñoz just outside of Málaga, Spain. This local eatery is known for its “Espetos”–wood grilled sardines on a stake. We also enjoyed other fire-charred local seafood 🐟 including whole grilled squid. Málaga wow’ed us with not only its authentic seaside cuisine, but its charming streets, murals, and architecture. — FRTakeover by @barcelonawinebar bwbspaintrip

Our Wine & Spirits Director, @gretchenlenae, knows A LOT about wine and also happens to be barrels of fun. When we visited Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce to visit our dear friend, Juan Antonio Ponce, he surprised the team with the opportunity to stomp grapes. He not only makes fantastic wines, he knows and cares about his relationship with barcelonawinebar. He expresses true gratitude and hospitality whenever we visit. His wines are pleasant, easy drinking, yet soulful–a great representation of the winemaker himself. After we *crushed* 🍇 our tour, we headed outdoors to fire-up an authentic asado. Over coals from the grape vines on the property, we cooked up Baby Lamb Chops along with Potatoes cooked in Olive Oil and Eggs — FRTakeover by @barcelonawinebar bwbspaintrip

We venture to Spain several times a year with select facesofbwb because we believe that living, eating, and breathing the Spanish lifestyle is far more valuable to our team than any other training we can provide.
