Knot grass - 𝘈𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘢 𝘳𝘶𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘴 (Linnaeus, 1758 - - - - P. Arthropoda > SubP. Hexapoda > C. Insecta > O. Lepidoptera > F. Noctuidae > 𝘈𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘢 𝘳𝘶𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘴 - - - - - The knot grass is distributed across the palearctic region (all Eurasia and North Africa). These moths tend to spend their lives in plants located in wide-open areas like meadows, woodland clearings, gardens, and hedgerows, generally in non-humid areas. A. rumicis has a wingspan of 3.4 to 4.4 cm. The forewings are blotched with a mixture of dark and light-grey shades, while the hindwings are dark brown. A white spot is seen midway down the trailing edge of the forewing, providing a distinct marker for this species. This species generally have two broods: the first generation flies in May and June, while the second flies in August and September. At the caterpillar stage (2nd picture), A. rumicis tends to feed on herbaceous plants and occasionally on the leaves of shrubs or Prunus fruit trees. Eggs are laid in clusters and they hatch after 5-10 days. Larvae can get as big as 4 cm. Once the winter months near, fully grown caterpillars pupate in cocoons on leaves or leaf litter. Adult moths tend to emerge in June but can also appear in earlier months if the weather is consistently warm. #acronictarumicis  #acronicta  #knotgrass  #butterfly  #lepidoptera  #animal #insectsofinstagram  #nature #naturephotography  #wildlife #wildlifephotography  #biodiveristy #zoology  #insect

Some caterpillar pics. First one is an American dagger moth caterpillar, and while looking it up, I found out they're poisonous 😶. Apparently their yellow hairs secrete a toxin that leaves welts on your skin, but I've handled then my whole life and never got any so 🤷‍♂️. The second one is a cold Isabella tiger moth (I call them teddy bears 🤷‍♂️) caterpillar that warmed up on my hand and seemed to like me. #psa #donttrythisathome #iguess #poisonous #caterpillar #americandaggermoth #isabellatigermoth #pyrrharctia #isabella #acronicta #Americana #nature #insects #insectsofinstagram

How cute is that? A little army of American dagger moth caterpillars (Acronicta americana). Beware these furry little charmers though - they really are armed with defensive daggers. Those 5 clusters of black lashes on their backs snap off on contact, deploying stinging, itching toxins into the skin of the offender. This little guy marched right at me, as if to show me first-hand the power of it’s armaments. When I repositioned to get a side view, he turned and marched determinedly in my direction. I managed to avoid contact and still get him/ her moved off the path, out of harms way, and on path back to the oak, birch, ash, maple, willow or other species it might have been feeding on. #daggermothcaterpillar #daggermoth #acronicta #acronictaamericana #ouch #donottouch #caterpillarsofinstagram #caterpillarsofmassachusetts #nature #naturalworld #caterpillar #moths
