Before I got to sleep Tokyo time... some T-Day Menu Ideas for y'all: Fennel Gratin, Moonshine Shoyu Roast Duck (that I'm pretty sure was inspired by @ladyandpups), Wild Mushroom Pie (recipe coming today), and Crispy Brussels with mint and capers (aka ain't yo mama's brussels). These are all very good ideas. I'm eating melonpan from the conbini in the dark and using my external hard drive as a plate, so, yeah that all sounds preeettty good about now. Good thing we fly home tomorrow and I can get my home cooking fix on! The Japanese country side ceramic studio version of wwllt. I've visited this and a handful of others ceramic studios in the Aso Mountains over and over throughout the past few years of hosting retreats here, and their mix of modern & old daily detritus remains one of my favorite subjects to photograph. A television, a pack of cigarettes, an empty sake bottle, a phone, plastic bags, sponges—artifacts. I hope that in twenty years from now when I come back yet again it isn't all lost. I hope to still see ancient kilns and the odd empty Asahi can. What does your work space usually look like? Here's a bit of Thanksgiving inspiration as the day fast approaches. This is a shot from a Thanksgiving feast with @krugchampagne that I creative directed + edited from abroad. A huge thanks + 🙌🏻 to our wildly talented team: stylist & florist @petalinefloral, food stylist @susan_m_rowe, and photographer @ericcharlespeterson for executing this beautiful gathering. It was so cool to see this all come together even with me on the other side of the world! We fly home from Tokyo tomorrow just in time for Thanksgiving at home. A Kyoto temple, edited with Vol. 2 of my LM Lightroom Presets, The Travel Collection. It will be released next weeK & it's inspired by editing photographs from my favorite destinations like Japan, France, Greece, Marrakech, and more. You can grab 15% off via the link in profile—it's valid on Vol 1., my classic everyday collection which is already out (and also available via the link in profile!), and will be valid on Vol. 2 when it releases! . . I'm also thinking about creating a tutorial on radial masks in Lightroom. They're super powerful & totally game changing...and SO under utilized! They're a Lightroom secret weapon. Is that something my fellow photo geeks would be interested in? Let me know in the comments! Anyone out there using and loving radial masks/filters? I think learning how to use them in Lightroom can really add that "whoa!" to your photographs that presets alone can't do. This photo has two on it in addition to the preset. And speaking of this photo, while I love the energy of my favorite cities—Tokyo, Paris, New York—I will be the first to admit that I have a bit of FOMO I can't shake when I'm in them, always feeling the pull of the streets, friends, the new. I need my time in quiet places SO much. . . Total introvert here. Away from the action is where I can work and focus, recharge and rest. I'm in bustling Shinjuku now. But in two days we head back to Chattanooga, where I lead my most diligent & quiet life. Sure, it's not temples or shrines or immaculate gardens, but it's my retreat. When I'm there I'm all about home. I live in a linen bathrobe, convert my bathtub into an office (it can be done), and bask in the glory of having nothing better to do. It's a wonderful feeling, knowing that you aren't missing a thing. I cook at home, glue myself behind a computer & work, Netflix and chill (okay, so there is a large amount of actual , literal Netflix involved...), and feel 100000% content with going no father than my mailbox. . Which are you? City mouse or country mouse? Or a bit of both like me? localmilkfilter iamatraveler bbctravel . . . kyoto japan kyotojapan takemethere traveldeeper beautifuldestinations doyoutravel

One of the most beautiful shops in the world, @hakujitu_ in Tokyo. I'll be heading over there later today to see @__tokizaki's exhibit of handmade leather goods + do some dream prop shopping for the cookbook. I've been working away all morning at our Shinjuku @airbnb in sweat pants but now it's time to don a snazzy beret and hit the streets with Eula. First stop is @fuglentokyo to meet up with @matthewlud &. @vja. I'm running late & the Airbnb looks like a bomb went off... of course! Edit: she passed out so we stayed in for the moment. 😅What are you guys up to today? Magical, mystical, dreamlike Japan. The honeymoon is far from over—I'm as in love with Japan as I was the first time I came here. @hsakag & I are already planning our spring retreat in Kurokawa. It will be one of only a few retreats I host next year as I focus on my book, and it usually sells out within 24 hours, so if you think you'd like to join us on one of these once in a lifetime trips make sure to sign up for the retreat mailing list via the link in profile! Healing hot springs baths, a ceramic village nestled in the mountains, ikebana, kaiseki & seasonal Japanese cuisine, and a traditional tea house are all some of the experiences you can look forward to on the retreat. In addition to the cultural & culinary experience we'll be teaching social media & digital marketing strategies for creative businesses & online entrepreneurs, the history & meaning of wabi-sabi, the art of slow living, and DSLR photography & editing in Lightroom. During these sessions I pour out all that I have learned over the past 5 years and alll my secrets learned from lots of research, experience, and lots of mistakes. That said you don't have to be a photographer or entrepreneur to join us! You can always take a dip in the onsen during a session if it isn't your thing! Breakfast is definitely my favorite meal of the day. I totally don't trust breakfast skippers. 🤔 I kid, I kid. What's you fave meal of the day? I had ume onigiri & a Royal Milk Tea out of the vending machine for breakfast in the train station today (we are Kurokawa bound!), but I wish I'd had a bowl of this Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal with coconut whipped cream. Though I do love my conbini onigiri! You can get this recipe on my blog through the link in profile (bonus: it just happens to be vegan + gluten free!), so please make this and eat it for me! Maybe I'll get an onigiri post up at some point to rep for all my fave brekkies! But in the mean time, get your pie fix in porridge form! In case you missed my post last night, let me introduce you to the newest recipe on the blog! Tamago Kake Gohan. Insanely simple, traditional Japanese rice & egg bowl. Swipe left to see what it looks like all stirred up and ready to eat! It totally transforms. This is our go to breakfast. When we wake up we throw rice in the rice cooker which cooks while I make a quick miso soup. Then we stir a fresh egg, a bit of shoyu, and some mirin into the steaming hot rice and let it sit for a few minutes the heat of the rice results in a crazy luscious, creamy bowl of goodness. Top with whatever you like—we keep it simple with a nori & ume furikake but you can do scallions, some nice fish like salmon or tuna, avocado, ume plum. You name it! Get the recipe via the link in profile now—it's so easy! What toppings sound good to you? Small rituals, our morning family walk to coffee. You could just call them routines. But I like to approach the little moments of my day with reverence, because it's when we regard the mundane moments as worthy of our time & attention and really relish them that our lives become beautiful and infused with pleasure. Learning to enjoy the mundane and make it beautiful has transformed my life. November's "The Art of Slow Living" newsletter will be all about ways to find and create beauty in your everyday routines and turn them into pleasurable, mindful rituals. It will address how to carve out time so you don't rush through your day and ways I make things I previously ignored or didn't enjoy pleasurable like doing the dishes, laundry, and tidying. I really love housekeeping, can you tell? Haha. I do not. But with a few adjustments in my tools, methods, and thinking I certainly enjoy them a lot more. You can sign up for the newsletter on my blog in the sidebar or at the bottom of any post (link in profile!). What are some of your favorite mundane rituals? Breakfast and bath! Least favorite? Dishes and laundry here! 🙋🏻 How do you make your imperfect, mundane moments lovely? My two favorite people in the world, the love of my life / the hottest guy I've ever seen @matthewlud and our baby girl Eulalie. When I look at them, I can't believe it. It's unreal that I have such a sweet, loving, beautiful family. Negotiating children and marriage is no small feat. My marriage is a huge priority to me—we fell in love fast and hard and it was mental and I never want to lose the pure, electric magic of "wow—you're my husband!" But pregnancy & the subsequent breastfeeding days took a toll on me physically that I'm only now starting to see fall away as Eula eats more solid food during this 2nd year of her life. I'm sad(ish) to see that time with her fade but extremely psyched to feel my body becoming mine again. For me, my marriage is a baby we have to take care of too, and I prioritize it as such. When she's grown and gone, we'll be the last two standing. Without love everything turns to ashes in my mouth—my career, the travel, my home. It's nothing without him. For others that might be friends, family, or even a great relationship with yourself. But we all need love. Sharing this life with him gives me deep joy, as deep as motherhood. As my mother says, I'm a one owner dog, and I reserve my vulnerability for my partner. It's just how I'm wired. I don't have a posse of best friends. I don't want that. I just want these two, and I put them before the whole world. It simplifies things, to be sure. slowmotherhood livemoremagic milklovescoffee . . . . habitandhome livethelittlethings theeverydayproject thehappynow parenthood momlife motherhood nothingisordinary marriage EulalieWilla

AkatsukiCoffee, one of many stops (for a much needed iced latte, eff you jet lag) in Kyoto today while we provisioned for our machiya. I like to cook as much as I eat out when I'm in Kyoto. Tomorrow breakfast is going to be hot sticky rice + raw egg (which actually forms the creamiest porridge type situation) with miso soup (spiked with yuzu and swimming with fresh tofu & seasonal veggies). Right now the whole family, self included, is delirious with jet lag. We've tried every trick in the book to keep baby awake & now are going to try every trick in the book to get her to sleep. And ourselves as well. Good morning/good night. Fingers crossed Eula doesn't wake up ready to party at 1 AM! Textures of Japan. It's a little ironic how happy I am here. I was depressed about traveling again because of some recent health problems and general exhaustion, but now that I'm here it doesn't even feel like travel (aside from the jet lag!) Rather it feels like another home away from home. We live our normal routine here. Coffees, work, grocery shopping, cooking, yoga, running (him not me...haha), date nights, and walks with Eula. It's clean and calm and kind here, and my heart is finding it very agreeable. I always feel guilty/have social anxiety about the language barrier when ever there is one (which is like most of the time for me!), but most of the locals are so easy going about it, it makes me feel a little better and, of course, I try. And milk bread, fresh tofu, and Japanese pickles don't hurt. . . . localmilkabroad iamatraveler japan livemoremagic 🇯🇵

Back in Japan. It feels like we were just here, and at the same time I'm already mourning the day we leave even though we just arrived. . . We're settling in Kyoto until we leave on November 5 to host our long anticipate Japan Escape—a nine day culinary, cultural, & photography journey with 6 guests through Japan from South to North. After that we'll spend a few days visiting with friends in Tokyo before making the long journey home. We traveled from Chattanooga to Kyoto yesterday—22 hours door to door—and while that sounds long it's actually astonishing how simple it is to wake up on the other side of the world. A drive, a flight, a metro, a train, a cab. And then like magic we're sleeping on tatami mats in a little machiya nestled in the heart of Kyoto. I was actually gutted to leave home, didn't feel ready. But now that I'm here I'm so, so happy to be here. We're headed for coffee at @weekenders_coffee and then breakfast at @tan_kyoto. Eula's nursery complete with the gorgeous @kalonstudios Caravan crib. How I love being home. I knew from day one it was the crib we wanted because it will convert to a bed when she's old enough, its gorgeous, and because it's handmade by a small business that we believe in and love buying from. Our bed & dresser are made by them also. As we continue to get rid of more and more of our possessions, furniture included, I've come to really appreciate the few pieces we're keeping. I'm out of oats from making this creamy, perfect Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal (get the recipe via the link in my profile!) every single freaking day this week. Also just happens to be vegan & gluten free. If you happen to have pumpkin (in pumpkin form or can form!), some oats, a few basic spices, vanilla, maple syrup, and some form of mylk/milk: you can make this! Though I cannot. 😭 I really should just pop out for oats, but we leave for Japan tomorrow so I'm in full on packing mode. Anyhow, those of you who do have the ingredients or time to do a quick run to the store, please eat this for me. Because it's basically guilt free pie for breakfast. And if you do I recommend a bit of coco whip & a tiny extra drizzle of maple syrup. PS. Littles. @owl_emma's daughter Soma playing with EulalieWilla in Marrakech. These moments are everything. And I can't believe that one day my baby will also morph into a little girl. . . . As a working mom, I'm so mindful & sometimes even a little fearful about being totally present and savoring every last moment of these years we'll never get back. We plan to be a one child household because our family feels complete, and that makes me even more mindful of every moment because I don't assume I'll experience it again. So when you're trying to juggle the circus that is running your own business, making a home, being a partner, being a mother, and being a healthy human (or whatever your circus is...we all have them!)...what are strategies for carving out all of those non-negotiable blocks of time? That's the first topic I'll be tackling in my new, monthly newsletter called (of course!) "The Art of Slow Living". I have one big tool in my toolbox to protect my time, one word: "No." But it's often easier said than...said! The first letter tackles why to say no, when to say no, and how to say no! All so we can say a big fat "YES!" to the few essential things that really truly matter. Like cuddling littles, loving partners, thriving businesses, and healthy bodies. Click the link in profile & visit the blog to subscribe & sign up for the newsletter—this one goes out tomorrow morning so don't miss it! How do you guys protect your time?
