Big frost this morning. This poem, The Sunlight on the Garden', by Louis MacNeice half came back to me and I had to look it up when I got into work. This is the first of four stanzas. If you like poetry and MacNeice hasn't been on your radar, I'd recommend that you take a look. The sunlight on the garden  Hardens and grows cold,  We cannot cage the minute  Within its nets of gold;  When all is told  We cannot beg for pardon. . . . . poem poetry winter frost cold  nofilterfood nature sustainablelivingfarmsmallholdingireland love producesustainablelifestyleselfsufficientgrowyourownhomegrownurbangardenersrepublic groworganicorganicorganicgardeningurbanorganicgardenerthehappygardeninglife farmlife farmtotable

Out for a trot. Turns out that pigs can fly.. or climb.. or jump.. over our fence! They've managed to get out a couple of times now and we don't know how! We think they may be climbing on top of each other's back and making a leap for freedom that way. We call this the aptly named piggy-back method. It's either that or someone has been supplying them with rope ladders. Has anyone had an issue with piggy escapes? . . . . pigsofinstagram pig piggies pigs  nofilterfood nature sustainablelivingfarmsmallholdingireland love producesustainablelifestyleselfsufficientgrowyourownhomegrownurbangardenersrepublic groworganicorganicorganicgardeningurbanorganicgardenerthehappygardeninglife farmlife farmtotable

If you don't dead head all of your roses these attractive rose hips develop. Not only do they look beautiful and add some colour to the season, they can also be used to make tea, sauce, jelly and other delicious foods. Today, I'm going to try fresh rose hip tea and I'm going to dry out some and grind it up for later use. I'll put the process up on the blog when I'm finished! . . . rose roses rosehips nature nofilterfood nature sustainablelivingfarmsmallholdingireland love producesustainablelifestyleselfsufficientgrowyourownhomegrownurbangardenersrepublic groworganicorganicorganicgardeningurbanorganicgardenerthehappygardeninglife farmlife farmtotable

Spooky Halloween pumkins and on the left the original - a carved turnip. The name Jack o' lantern is well known but you might not know where it comes from. It is from a story about a guy who was known as stingy Jack, who didn't like spending his money. One day he went for a drink with the devil, as you do, but didn't want to use his own money to buy the drinks. To save his cash he talked the devil into turning into a coin to pay for the booze, saying the devil would be able to escape back to his drink once everything had been paid for, but instead of paying the barkeep he pocketed the coin next to a silver cross and trapped the devil. He carried the devil around as a coin like this for a while but eventually freed him on condition that the devil would leave him alone for a year and not claim his soul. The devil came back a year later as mad as you would expect but was tricked again by the silver-tongued rogue and this time Jack was given ten years of peace when he released the devil. When Jack died a while later he wasn't allowed into heaven for being such a chancer and the devil didn't want him in hell because he had enough of him. Instead he set Jack to roaming the earth with a lump of coal in a hollowed out turnip and he was now known as Jack of the lantern or Jack o'lantern for short. For a long time in Ireland turnips with scary faces were carved in his honour at Halloween and when the tradition went over the ocean to America, pumpkins replaced the turnips. In Ireland today, most people have forgotten about the turnip and carve the easier pumpkins for Halloween but hopefully the tradition of carving turnips won't die out completely! halloween pumpkins jackolantern turnip spooky turnips history myth tradition nofilterfood sustainablelivingfarmsmallholdingireland love producesustainablelifestyleselfsufficientgrowyourownhomegrownurbangardenersrepublic groworganicorganicorganicgardeningurbanorganicgardenerthehappygardeninglife farmlife farmtotable

Stormy day here at the farm- this video is from early in the day before the peak here in Kildare. It is dying down now, thankfully. We had a quick look and we've lost a few trees and some large branches from others. All humans and animals are well though and that's the most important thing. Thoughts are with those who loved the people who were killed and best wishes to those working through the night to restore power and normality. storm ophelia wind  nofilterfood sustainablelivingfarmsmallholdingireland love producesustainablelifestyleselfsufficientgrowyourownhomegrownurbangardenersrepublicgroworganicorganicorganicgardeningurbanorganicgardenerthehappygardeninglife farmlife farmtotable
